A dash cam acts as an eyewitness by recording what happened before, during, and after a road incident. According to traffic data from the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System, about 92,583 road crashes occurred annually from 2013 to 2022. [1]
However, choosing a dash cam for cars is anything but simple. Issues may arise from low-quality dash cams. For example, being scratched at night or being involved in a collision on the road, only to find blurry footage or missing key segments when reviewing the recording.
In the Philippines, how to choose a dash cam that yields clear recordings?

Single or Multi-Channel Recording
The first decision when choosing a dash cam for cars is the number of recording channels. A channel refers to one camera view. More channels mean wider coverage but also higher cost.
1. Single-channel
A single-channel camera records only the road ahead, such as frontal collisions, sudden braking, lane changes, traffic-light disputes, etc.
- Pros: The most affordable and easiest type to install. It also uses less storage than a multi-channel system.
- Cons: Limited coverage, cannot show what happened behind the car or inside the cabin.
- Suitable for: Budget-focused drivers or individuals who only require basic forward monitoring on low-traffic routes.
2. Dual-channel
A dual-channel car dash camera combines a front camera with a rear camera. It records both the front road view and the rear window view.
- Pros: Offers a practical balance between coverage and cost. It is particularly useful in heavy urban traffic, where motorcycles and vehicles frequently move between lanes.
- Cons: Needs more cost and installation work. The rear cable must also be routed through the cabin without blocking airbags or interfering with movable parts.
3. Three-channel
A three-channel system records the front, rear, and cabin. It is designed for taxi drivers, ride-sharing drivers, delivery fleets, driving schools, etc.
Cabin recording adds cost and consumes more storage. It may also involve privacy responsibilities. The Philippine National Privacy Commission states that organizations using camera systems to process personal data must follow requirements related to transparency, legitimate purpose, data security, and access to recorded footage. Video Quality
Video quality determines whether your footage can clearly show important details. When comparing dash cameras for cars, resolution and frame rate are two major specifications to check.
1. Resolution: 1080p vs 2K vs 4K
Resolution measures the total horizontal and vertical pixel count in each frame. The higher the resolution, the more details are captured.
- 1080p (1920×1080 pixels): It can provide usable daytime footage, but distant signs and plates may lose detail when the image is enlarged.
- 2K (2560×1440 pixels): It provides a strong balance of sharp image detail and efficient storage usage, making license plates legible at moderate distances without filling storage cards rapidly.

The main disadvantages are larger video file sizes and reduced low-light performance, because the camera shutter speed per frame must be shorter. In some products, selecting 60 frames per second lowers the maximum resolution.

Field of View (FOV)
Field of view indicates the area the dash cam can capture. A wider lens can record adjacent lanes, sidewalks, motorcycles, and vehicles entering from the side.
For most dash cameras for cars, a front field of view of approximately 120° to 140° provides a useful balance. This range is wide enough to cover multiple lanes without making distant vehicles appear excessively small.
An extremely wide lens is not always better. As the camera covers a larger scene, objects occupy fewer pixels. Strong wide-angle distortion can also make vehicles and plates near the edge appear smaller or curved.

Loop recording is a standard feature that allows the camera to continue recording even when the memory card becomes full. The system works by automatically replacing the oldest unlocked footage with new recordings, so you do not need to manually delete files frequently.

Cloud storage adds another layer of protection. Instead of relying only on a physical memory card, some advanced dash cams can upload emergency clips, snapshots, or important driving data online.
Installation and Connectivity

1. Mounting methods
Most dash cams for cars come with adhesive mounts, suction cup mounts, and electrostatic stickers for easy installation on the windshield.
Adhesive mount provides a firm, lasting bond that eliminates vibration and withstands extreme cabin heat. The suction cup is easier to remove and transfer. However, it is larger and may loosen under heat. Electrostatic stickers provide a middle solution. They attach to the windshield without strong adhesive directly on the glass.
2. Power supply
A cigarette-lighter charger is the simplest option. The camera normally starts when the vehicle is turned on and stops when accessory power is removed.
